Dear Missionaries:
I hear drumsticks playing the Thanksgiving National Anthem: "Turkey in the Haystack, Turkey in the Straw." Bless his old juicy gizzard! Before long, someone will be breaking his wishbone.
But then -- my wishbone feels a bit flimsy right now as I remember the "fatted turkey" "home in the range" behind a savory oven door.
I am sure that the family hour around the Thanksgiving table of "home sweet home" will be missed by all of us.
But missionaries never cry, they just count their beans and share the blessings of their calling with the poor in spirit.
Shall we pause now to reflect upon the Thanksgiving of   ' 59 and take a steady look at our appetites?
I've heard it said that "Life is a banquet at which most of us starve to death because we lack the appetite for life."
Whe we say, "I'm all fed up," is it because, in reality, deep down in our wishbone we feel the squeeze of failure and self-deception? None of us like to be thought of as a party to deception, but why do we so often go bargain hunting over the counters of rationalization?
However, today is not my aim to preach. I just want to wish you all a very tasty Thanksgiving.
I pray, that for you, there'll be more than "four and twenty" blessings "baked in a pie". When the pie is open and your heart begins to sing - remember that life is real and is a gift from God. Make the most of it before the most of it is gone!
Sincerely,
Julia S. Brown
