James Bone Latimer and Margaret Reid Dougal

James Latimer

John Latimer

James was born in Antrim, Ireland on July 17, 1819. He married Margaret Reid Dougal in Glasgow, Scotland in about 1844. Margaret bore six sons and one daughter. She, Margaret, passed away on her daughter's fourteenth birthday, who then took on the sudden challenge of her mother's responsibilities.

James, with his family, sailed from Liverpool in 1872 with 672 others bound for Zion. By rail, they came to Salt Lake City from New York. James built a home and life began anew. The home he built was just northeast of the viaduct located on South Temple Street.

Margaret Reid Dougal

Margaret Dougal

Margaret was born in Paisley, a suburb of Glasgow, on January 12, 1819. As has already been stated, Margaret bore six sons and one daughter, Catherine. Of her six sons, two of them died in infancy, and one was killed in a train accident at the age of about 20.

When Margaret died on Catherine's fourteenth birthday, daughter played the mother's role. As an interesting side note, though Margaret's last name is recorded as Dougal, her father's name is recorded as Robert McDougal. She, Margaret, passed away on June 1, 1870 in Glasgow, Scotland at the age of 51.
