John Ferguson Scott and Ann Shields

John Ferguson Scott

John Scott

He was born about 1812 in Scotland. While young, he was arrested for poaching on some estate and was put into the army. He was placed to guard the coast of Ireland wearing kilts.

His bare knees and the bitter winds caused him to desert the army and changed his name from what, we do not know. Later, he feared detection and changed his name to John Ferguson Scott.

He married Ann Shields in Jan 18, 1840 in Fenwick, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was baptized into the church in 1850 and was confirmed on that night of March 1850. He was soon excommunicated April 1850 because he indulged in some drinking. He had six children.

A son born in 1853 was named Robert Logan after an Elder from Utah. His family was estranged from him at the time his family emigrated to Utah. He was a weaver and made beautiful paisley shawls.

His wife, Ann, brought one with her to Utah. He was left alone in Scotland and died in the Boothill Work House August 7, 1878.

Ann Shields

Ann Shields

Ann was born in Fenwick, Ayrshire, Scotland in February 28, 1817. When she was married to John, she must have been about 23 years of age. She, with two daughters, Margaret and Agnes, and son, Robert Logan Scott, emigrated to America sometime after 1875.

They came by ship and train to Salt Lake City. While they were at the docks ready to board the ship, their father, John Ferguson came to bid them goodbye. He told them that the family name was not Scott, but Fram.

We know very little about Ann Shields after she arrived in Salt Lake City, except that her son, Robert Logan Scott was married to Catherine Latimer Sept 11, 1876. What we do know is that sometime after the marriage of her son, she went to Coalville, Summit County to live and died there April 5, 1882.
